Left-Arm Spinner Took 95 Wickets in ODI and T20I Cricket; Last Played for India in 2014

Patiala, 28 August (Sports Desk)

Former Indian women’s cricket team left-arm spinner Gouher Sultana announced her retirement from all forms of cricket on Friday, August 27, 2025.

The 37-year-old, who debuted internationally in 2008, played 50 Women’s One-Day Internationals (WODIs) and 37 Women’s T20 Internationals (WT20Is), securing 66 and 29 wickets, respectively. Her final appearance for India was in 2014. Sultana participated in two ODI World Cups (2009, 2013) and three T20 World Cups (2009–2014). Her ODI bowling average of 19.39 ranks third among Indian bowlers with 50 or more wickets, while her WT20I average stood at 26.27.

Sultana made a comeback to competitive cricket through the Women’s Premier League (WPL), representing UP Warriorz in the 2024 and 2025 seasons, though she played only four matches across both editions.

In her retirement note on Instagram, Sultana wrote, “Representing India at the highest level – in World Cups, tours, and battles that tested skill and spirit – has been the greatest honor of my life.”

Domestically, Sultana represented Hyderabad, Puducherry, Railways, and Bengal. She added, “Cricket will always be home. Though my playing career ends, my passion for the game remains stronger than ever. I look forward to contributing to cricket in new ways, inspiring and guiding the next generation. This isn’t a goodbye, but the close of a cherished chapter.”

A BCCI Level 2 coach, Gouher Sultana is expected to continue her involvement in cricket in a coaching or mentoring capacity.
