38-Year-Old Off-Spinner, Two-Time IPL Champion with Chennai Super Kings, Ends 16-Year IPL Career

Indian off-spin legend Ravichandran Ashwin, aged 38, announced his retirement from the Indian Premier League (IPL) on August 27, 2025, concluding a remarkable 16-year journey in the tournament.
Ashwin played 221 IPL matches, claiming 187 wickets at an economy rate of 7.20, making him the fifth-highest wicket-taker in IPL history. He also contributed 833 runs with the bat, including a notable half-century for Rajasthan Royals in 2022.
“Today marks a special day and a new beginning. As my journey as an IPL cricketer ends, my exploration of the game across various leagues begins,” Ashwin shared on social media.
Ashwin debuted in the IPL with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in 2009, playing a pivotal role in their title victories in 2010 and 2011. He was named Player of the Tournament in the 2010 Champions League, a now-defunct competition won by CSK. He stayed with CSK until 2015, before moving to Rising Pune Supergiant in 2016 due to CSK’s two-season suspension.

After missing the 2017 season due to injury, Ashwin led the bowling attack for Punjab Kings in 2018 and 2019, played for Delhi Capitals in 2020 and 2021, and spent three seasons with Rajasthan Royals. In 2025, he returned to CSK but had limited opportunities, playing nine matches and taking seven wickets at an economy of 9.12.
Beyond the IPL, Ashwin has played over 300 T20 matches and currently leads the Dindigul Dragons in the Tamil Nadu Premier League. Off the field, he has gained prominence as a podcaster and YouTuber, amassing over 1.75 million subscribers on YouTube.
